With its rivers, lagoons and beaches, Maceio is a breathtaking illustration of natural beauty. The name Maceio originates from the words “Maçayó” or “Maçai-o-k”, meaning “that which covers the wetlands”. Historians differ on the original development of the city. Some give credit to a sugar mill that started in the eighteenth century while others attest the beginning of the city to a small beach village. Whatever the origin, by sea or sugar, Maceio is a place blessed by nature.
